Hydrogen, from production to distribution

Air Liquide is present at every step of the hydrogen value chain

Thanks to its unique hydrogen expertise developed in industry (space, aeronautics, heavy industry) over the last 60 years, Air Liquide masters the entire value chain: production, conditioning and distribution.

Increase in hydrogen production with Cryocap H2 for carbon capture

Producing renewable or low-carbon hydrogen

Our technologies and our capacity for innovation enable us to offer, depending on market needs, renewable or low carbon hydrogen produced
  • By electrolysis from renewable energies (wind,
  • solar, hydro) or low carbon sourceI
  • By natural gas or biogas reforming with CO2
  • capture
A major challenge for Air Liquide is to scale up the production of renewable and low carbon hydrogen to decarbonize our activities and those of our customers committed to the energy transition.

Water electrolysis

Electrolysis, a technique mastered by the Group since the 70s, is used to produce hydrogen based on the decomposition of
water. Behind these technical words lies a large scale production process of low carbon hydrogen that Air Liquide has
deployed, providing a concrete response to the energy transition.

Natural gas or biogas reforming with carbon capture

Today, hydrogen is mainly produced from natural gas using steam methane reforming. Our in house solution, CryocapTM H2,
is the only one that can capture carbon dioxide while also increasing the production of hydrogen. It can then be stored at a
large scale or reused in other industrial processes or the food industry.

Mastering the hydrogen supply chain

Hydrogen can be stored at a large scale and transported in liquid or gaseous form. With over 60 years of experience, Air Liquide is a renowned expert, mastering both the gaseous and liquid hydrogen value chain for a climate centric, optimized, total cost of ownership.

Gaseous supply chain

With over 58 filling centers worldwide, we can offer tailored solutions for every need, combining delivery by pipeline, by
trailer and in bulk. Our leadership in high pressure conditioning and composite storage allows us to optimize payload and
lower our carbon intensity, while providing a quality traceability for all our deliveries.

Liquid supply chain

Leveraging our worldwide leadership in extreme cryogenics and liquefaction, Air Liquide currently operates 5 hydrogen
liquefiers worlwide at a total capacity above 60 tonnes per day, and cumulating over 800,000 hours of operation. Proven
design, inhouse development, proprietary equipment... we design, deploy and operate state of the art solutions for liquid
hydrogen.
